While in spain I had another chance meeting of epic proportions, Jose Segundo a designer, surfer, lomo lover from Montevideo, U. He is doing a surf mission around Portugal in September, so i hope to join him on this little journey.

Surfing Finland

I dont think i have ever associated these two words together before..

But yes its true, the myths have been proved correct, there are waves in finland.

According to My surf guide marko, the season has begun, and it all depends on the wind variations which involve howling onshores, bringing a few feet of wind swell. Similar to surfing the great lakes i guess. Wind swell is totally different than ground swell, in the fact it has no push, which most normal surfers are used to. Wind swell is an aquired style, the finnish surfing community have locked down. After a 300km drive, during the rush hour on a friday, we caught our first glimps of the coast, and totally to my suprise i saw what resmebled a rough looking right hand point.

Before paddling out to this secret spot, marko warned me of the dangers; dark water means you cant see the bottom. Its really rocky and shallow with rocks popping up all over the place. Also glass, and the heavy localism of these spots. The line up was like a frenzy of thrashing seals.

I didnt listen or actually, i went into auto drive as i caught my first wave, and cruised into shore, and upon jumping off the wave was met by a big boulder to the ankle inches below the water, and the howling onshores sending the board rocketing at my face.

Apart from this i witnessed some of the most wave hungry commited surfers, who were getting stoked on some nice peaks, that without the search for the glide would probably just roll through unridden as the mythical water mountains of the baltic sea.

This was truly an exotic experience for a kiwi, and one of the random greatest things i have experienced in finland, laying my head down to sleep arriving back home in helsinki at 2:30am with the satisfied feeling you only get from a good session.

Uruguay Hip Shaking Sessions

Uruguay...

We have spent the last week or so in a little slice of Uruguayan perfection.

We have been staying in Punta Del Diablo, which is rather pleasant during the winter, no crowds and off shores every day with perfect shoulder hight peelers rolling into the bay.

The only boards available where some sexy foam funboards in fluro colors. The best and shortest (8ft) of the 3 was dubbed hip shaker(orange), and the others were 10ft tanks.

We had so many epic sessions on the beasts, that sam decided to get a job in town, and the drop in tranny carressed the Hip shaker through some nice waves, i was hip shaking on whatever was available, dubbed the hip shaker because of the trade mark pumping action produced when trying to work the orange beast down the line.

The Legend of chico

We spent an eerie couple of days in the tiny ghost town/surf spot of Porto fino. The only permanent inhabitant being the loco chico christian, who after a few beers made us lunch and fed us beers from 9:30 in the morning. He was a great host, if not a little wild, along with his troop of 5 dogs, i spent 3 days with waves all to myself.. and a few for chico.

Porto fino is a classic right hander, that can have rides of 500m or more, this is really similar to mangamanu style wave back in NZ.. scored this place at 3-6ft over a couple of days, and ther is tonnes, of other epic spots minutes from here..

We have been travelling around the north of argentina, bolivia and peru, so it was a welcome sight when we hit chile to see and smell the ocean.

Not so many shots of arica, but scored Iquique at a good solid 4ft with perfect barreling peaks 100m from where we are staying.

Iquique is like wave paradise, ther is about 10km of reef coastline with perfect breaks and sunny days CONSISTANTLY all year. Our hostal didnt even have a roof, thats how frequently it rains.

These are a few shots from what has become known as "toms reef". ´Nick named after one of the californians i have been surfing with who took his first nasty reef beating. Props to the veggie sam for surfing this place on a fun board with only one fin left... It was a ganrly right over shallow rock bottom..

The next few days we surfed the actual surfers spot, toms reef, is pretty much a body board wave.. This other one, is pretty famous in front of the Vertical surf shop and competition tower ,a punchy left that has spitting barrels that swallowed me occaisionally.

It doesnt look it but the set waves were easily stand up overhead classic blue barrels..

Arica

Home of the famous chillean pipeline "El Gringo" and big wave spot "El buey".

We manage to find the beautiful town of Arica, at a time when thankfully the swell was only a measly 6ft or somthing? This spot usually holds up to 20 ft, so i dont think i would be tackling that. The place we were staying at was as epic as the waves, and funny enough the guy who ran it was a big wave charger. His smallest board was a 6´6" gun. Actually he didnt own any other boards than guns.

heres a shot of el gringo doing its thing, there wasnt a wave that came through that didnt have a frothing spitting barrel. It was soo intense, and i read after that, its dangerous to surf it when its too small as this is a board breaking shallow beast.

Taking it to extremes, 100 on the other side of the tiny island that this wave breaks on, the swell pilters out and wraps around to La Isla with long perfect lefts peeling off into the bay.

Mid week Magnet

East coast was flat again, so we hit magnet for what was predicted to be only a foot or so of swell, what a surprise it was to be greeted with a solid 3-4ft and ruffled offshores!!

Mental session, resulting in a happy wave buzz and a foot that looks like it has been in a blender :(

We turned up and had the place to ourselves, until a school bus of grommets turned up, resulting in chaos in the line-up. I think i came in at this point.

wooo havnt updated in while.. apart from being super lazy 1) I had a hematoma in my knee from snowboarding, so just got angry when the surf was pumping but i did manage to get a few shots on the film camera, and 2) the spring wind has been howling onshore for the past few weeks..

but in amoungst the NE wave engulfers there has been a few good evening off shores..

heres a shot showing the state of the sand bars. the inner bar has been producing insane barrel sections, with an ankle deep sand bars..

Nice session at magnets.. a week ago now now, but since i munted my knee hitting rails, im still dreaming of this mental 5 hour session. Must be summer already?

i only snapped a few shots as we bolted back over the hill to ease our surfed out stomachs with some food, but the session went as follows, arrive, 2-4ft sets rolling in at mid-high tide, by the time we get in the water, the tide is so high the sets are less frequent and smaller..the crowd thins to just us.. 1 hour later the tide has dropd and the wave fest begins..

Had a great weekend surfwise.. the air temps are heating up, but the water is still ball shrivellingly cold.. Got a few good waves in at brighton on fri, before heading up the coast for a few brews, a whale jam and the underwater handball nationals.. Along with catching a good couple of dying feet at mangamanu, meatworks on sat and g-bay on the way home on sunday..

Shot over to Boulder, Colorado for work, and had a brief one day layover in LA on the way home. Apart form the amazing variety of people, Venice Beach would have to be a highlight, and checking out the Mollusk store was definately my favorite thing in that town.

Purchased a couple of T.moe teeshirts, and just in awe of all the fish, logs and quads in the shop.. Not much waves.. but the dudes assured me it was pretty good up by the piers.

Winter Swell

As previously predicted, it has been swining offshore on a regular basis, with the howling south westerlies/southerlies, we have been getting a dusting of snow, and some solid south and east ground swells.. this weekend we had a solid 3-5ft over the friday saturday sunday period (these are the only days i can surf cos it is too dark before and after work) heres some shots over the 3 days..

Brighton was an epic paddle.. we paddled for about 40mins and got sucked up the coast and still hadnt got past the second bar. So we hit scarborough (with 200 wave hungry buggers)

Offshore weekend

Winter is truly here.. thats good and bad, its bloody cold and the booties come out of the closet.. but scored SW off shores saturday and sunday!! and its going to be SW alot more due to the temp change.. EPIC!!
We even received a fresh dusting of snow on the hills and the alps!!

Just hit brighton both days, sunday swell had dropped from 2-3ft to the odd 1-2ft.

Went up to hanmer so greg could run the hanmer half marathon in 1:42mins nice work.. and on the way back despite the forecast predicting rubbish conditions.. we checked out our favorite left to be greeted by a 2-3ft onshore, soon turning glassy by the time we wandered down the hill!!

And the place was empty!!!

two weekends ago we shot over to stay in gregs batch in Davauchelles.. where b-rad had an encounter with the epic "davauchelles Reef".. We Hit hickory the next day when all of chch was flat.. greeted by a clean 2ft swell and the Canterbury single fin classic. Still plenty of peaks to split with the pros, and had a wicked view of the comp from the water.

The winds swung SW on sunday and after getting past the "slight" hangover from by brothers stag party, rolled out of bed and hit the water late arvo to a solid 3ft.. 100% commitment, we just went mad and paddled for everything including the odd 4-5ft closeouts.. good times and ner misses from the super shallow sand bars forming at brighton..

Shot up to Oaro, and had an epic time, the swell had vanished almost, but there was 1-2ft rolling through on a sweet little shallow reef, with a bit of fin grinding i managed to score a few rides before the tide went out..

then a little off the logriding.. and onto some aotearoa seafood..

scoured the rock pools and scored some good size paua, and these little beauties, "kina" best eaten straight from the source..

So hav'nt had an update for a while.. Chch has'nt been lacking in swell though had few few classic days over the last month or so.. but had a quick mish up the coast to kaikoura to try and get a few waves in before the boys indo trip departing next Sunday. Fcuk Yeah!

The swell has been pumping for the last week.. So on sunday the wind swung offshore and i rolled down to brighton to snap a few shots.. Sadley, i wasn't heading out cos i have an avulsion injury to my 4th and 5th metatarsils (my ankle)..

What a day, there was a solid 4-5ft swell rolling in and just one lone soldier out back surfing.

Out back by the way was at least 50m past the end of brighton pier, and i watched about 6 guys attempt the paddle and get nowhere. The best option would have been to jump off the end of the pier at high tide..

Brighton Explosion week 2

With the Light/Gusty SW offshores have been combinging nicely with the 2-4ft NE swells wrapping round the peniunsula and slotting nicely into Brighton. SW also dusting the mountains twith a little POW POW.. not enough to get excited about, but wintersliding will be updating soon!!!

Sorry bout the crappy digi zoom, will be getting a whole heap of decent telephoto shots developed soon..

Cake day activity # 1.

Best excecuted when the swell is minimal, and the onshores are extreme.

I was feeling like making somthing with my hands, so today with a little help, drew up a pattern of a cruisey sidewalk surf machine.

Trim out the basic shape.

Sand it down and smoothen up the rails.

Choose some wheels..

Some havnt been used since '79 (note the price tag)

Attach them to the board.

now to polish it off and grip it up to put it to the test.

Next week, the shaping shed gets redecorated.

Flew back in early sunday morning, and was notified by the "radical" b-RAD that brighton was on.. so from the plane went straight to the surf and man i wish i had booties on.. after 3hours i could hardley feel my toes, and even the hardest of men where shivering a little.. maybe ot due to the fact we had some sweet little waves down by the pier.

Due to the massive rip, sucking everyone up north left the south side free for some goodness..

Down to the North

It was getting a bit chilly in the south, so to extend the summer a little, we took a trip to the far north of NZ.

Despite spending half our budget in the first night at Waiheke, the trip kicked off to an awsome start up the west coast, with about 6-8ft swells, Offshore and i was the only person going out for a surf...? This was too good to be true!!! The whole trip, we were like off shore wind magnets, is this always the case, with the ever changing, unique climate of the far north?

The eastie was a bit slack with minimal swell, but such a beautiful place who can go wrong?

This trip left me feeling like why the hell do we live here in the south, i didnt even get my steamer out at all, its already ball freezingly cold here in chch and the beches dont look like the pages from the travel magazines. (well some of them do)

There is no doubt the north is a special place to be a surfer.

In no particular order:

Northland goodness, empty, clean, sizey and offshore, who needs to work anyway?

This place was crazy massive, desite the crap shots, was no doubt my favorite place..

Its hard to tell from the crappy digi zoom but the little glassy waves in the shorey were about 3 ft.. out back it was subsquently a lot bigger :P

Around every bend was a new break just screaming to be surfed.. empty again.

Cape reinga had a few waves, but you'd have to be insane to paddle out where the tasman sea meets the pacific.

Down the east coast you could see the potential..

The Infamous Taupo Bay.. nice place, but no swell and i was truly gutted.. Check out the shots at the Whangaroa surf blog of a good day..

Not a bad way to spend a friday afternoon, with no swell in town, we headed off to the otherside and checked out a pretty popular spot first. Was about 30 guys ruling the place, so we flagged it and shot round the corner to be greeted by an empty bay, with hell offshores and what appeared to be a pretty average size swell..

Until we got out there, the sets were bigger than the original estimation of about 2 ft.., the wind eased to light offshore and it was pumping. Even a few 4ft sizey swells rolled on in and worked us. There was lefts and rights and a few second barrels.

One of the best days i've seen it here in a looong time.

Tekapo Boat Trip

Brodie is flying out to korea in 2 weeks. We had been talking it up what awsome wakeboarders we are (despite never ever doing it before). So we finally worked our asses into catching up with him and heading down there to put money were our mouth is.
A few dramas hitting the road, but we eventually made it to lake tekapo, to be greeted by a crystal day, no wind and full sunshine all around. Skipper nortz put us to the test and we held our own in amoungst the hardcore ski biscuits, kneeboarders and the occasional extreme lake kyakers.

Kaikoura Mission

Kaikoura has some of the best breaks in the east coast and when theres a 4-6ft swell running, it has to be a great place to be, so it is about time "logriding" got a kaiks blog entry.

We boosted to kaikoura on friday night, had a few beers, missing the 6am surf alarm, resulting in us checking out the spots along with everybody else in town.

First off Kahutara, a mean as right point that pumps in a south swell.. It was predomintantly NE swell. so was heaps smaller than the rest of the spots, but still a good option.

Then the infamous "meat works" named after the days before booties, when surfers would get there feet minced up on the way in.. This was real raw and heavy, crowded with lid riders.

So we went out at Graveyards for an hour or so, this had some powerful little waves, which wernt closing out as much as meatworks.

MANGAMANU!! - After getting some Kai and a bit of rest, we hit the most famous right point in the south island and it was pumping!!! 4-6ft sets consistantly rolling in. This was refected in the crowd of 60 odd surfers getting as many waves as priority allowed. Real good vibe going down with no snaking, which meant about 3 waves an hour due to the consistancy of the take-off zone and the locals knowing excactly where to be to get on every set.. This was a priceless day in the water.

I love fridays, because its my day off, and what a better way to start the day by getting up at 6am and going for a surf in town.. With the mass of swell coming through there was a few people getting a wave in before work, i managed to snap a couple of pics before i got out there..

LaGuna Skimboarding madness

With the summer swell being minmal and local trend wave of skimboarding hitting town, the Laguna die hards decided to give skim boarding a go.. Basically this is when you run as fast as possible with a tiny flat board, thorw it down, jump on it and skim across the water to an on coming wave. Best spots are intense shore breaks..

Heres greggie doin a tail slide at a super secret spot.. Usually theres heaps of swell when everywhere else is flat..

Then B-rad, thought skim boarding was to physically demanding, so decided to go smash the shorey with "Talin"

and then we hit another seceret spot, way more intense.. with about a 3metre drop into the sea just where the wave breaks.. we only had enough balls to hit the smallest of the sets rolling through..

This was a real dangerous spot.

Had an awesome trip to the bay.

WE saw the sun once in 3 days, the surf was pretty minimal, no wind and the odd 4ft set coming through, about 1-3ft of messy swell the whole time, but with the usual crew, we had a "glad" old time.

Last weeken before i head over to finland, so the boys all decided on a roady no matter what the swell, (build up to this story, theres been no swell att all for the last week) any way over the the other side and got a sweet greeting to about 4ft of a little messy and a little chilly south swell.

Choice feed of chips on the way home, but dont rate the burgers much, little river visitor guestbook, you've let me down for the last time!!

Just spent the week away with my work, 6 solid days of drinking and team building activities.. how is this relevant?

well we just discovered the bes right hand point break in bluff, this spot was amazing it started at the headland with about 4-6ft of crazy smashing surf, then as it wrapped around the point for about a mile, greeted by a howling offshore breeze.

Once around the point the swell slowly dropped and cleaned up to a nice 1-3ft swell and we watched this guy on a single fin mal catch a ride for at least 3mins get off and walk back to the point!! this is crazy since the average ride for any wave is about 15 seconds..

The sun decide to shine, and the tempature rose above 10degrees, so Petra and I went over on sat to the Manderly festival at little river, and wow that was a waste of time, full of grannies and cost 10$ to get in, there was salsa dancing lessons though!!

we scrapped that idea and put our 10$ to better use at the infamous little river tearooms, and headed over to Te oka bay for sum surfing lessons, petra was catching more waves than i did!!

On Sunday i headed over again with the boys, and although the swell had dropped, still managed to get heaps of waves!!

So wanaka and queenstown have received a fresh dump of 10cms of snow in NOVEMBER for christs sake.. but with this big front of bad weather brought a sizable swell into the east coast of Otautahi.. We surfed scarborough and taylies fri-sun in bareable 13degree water.. along with every other person in town who is whiping the dust off their sticks and blowing the cobwebs off the lip.

SO heres a couple of shots i found in my collection. First shot is from the okuti valley, we made the 40 min drive to 1ft of dribble surf, but atleast there was a nice sunset, the boys all held each other for a moment. Next is on my lomo, of robbie, a little bigger this time..

I'm gutted i didn't have a chance to take some shots of the killer swells hitting canterbury for the last week and a half, i was to busy enjoying the oppurtunity of getting sum waves bigger than 4 ft..

Ok so we went up the coast again to a sweet little bay, and i was trying a few new things phtography style, my brother got given a 22 year old role of film and he let me finnish it off. As you can see it wasn't in as mint condition as i previously expected so first couple of shots where 2 out of 24 shots that actually cam out of the film. When my brother develops his shots, i'll post sum of those (brad hook me up when you read this), then theres a shot of the coast down to christchurch.

The last shot is on my new/old Polaroid SX-70 who have discontinued making the film :( I still have 3 packs of 10 shots, so watch this space in the future.

Ok so Canterbury is not Hawaii or the best place for surf in NZ..
But its not everyday you discover a long lefthand point of this quality at your back door!!

From top to bottom; I felt like bruce brown when they discoverd J-Bay, next; and when the tide came in it just got better,
lastly upon closer inspection there was enough room to do some pelvic thrusts in these pits!!!

When the conditions come together this place has soo much potential!
